Help - my Westinghouse side by side fridge is freezing my food!
If your Westinghouse side by side fridge freezer is freezing food in the right hand side fridge compartment, RELAX - and don't throw away your fridge or call an expensive technician!
Technicians will charge you:
- a call out fee
- time fee to diagnose problem
- expensive replacement part fee
- 33% margin on part fee
- second call out charge
- time fee to install new part
Often, a part that will cost you around $100 will end up costing you over $1000 with all the engineer's fees added on - so do it yourself, it's EASY!
Instead, you can save $$$ and do it yourself in a small number of very simple steps, which this article will explain. It's a very easy fix that ANYONE can do - it requires just a screwdriver and involves removing just one screw!
What is causing my Westinghouse fridge to freeze?
Before we discuss what you need to do to fix the problem, and the broken item that we need to change, it's important to first understand how the fridge works. At the bottom of the freezer compartment behind the back panel lies something called an evaporator, which makes the air very cold.
The evaporator fan blows this cold air up behind the back panel to the top of the freezer and through a vent into the top of the fridge. This channel into the top of the fridge is guarded by something called a baffle / damper, which opens and closes to let cold air in.
When the temperature sensors in the fridge tell the control that the fridge is too warm (eg if you just opened the fridge door), when you close the fridge door it will open the damper to let the cold air from the freezer compartment into the fridge compartment to cool it down.
Once the fridge has reached the desired temperature (eg 2 degrees Celcius) the computer closes the door so that no more cold air from the freezer comes in.
Of course, over time cold air will escape from the fridge even without the door opening, so this opening and closing of the vent repeats in a cycle.
What has broken when my Westinghouse fridge is freezing food?
As you might have guessed, when your Westinghouse side by side fridge is freezing food, the baffle / damper at the top of the fridge that lets the cold air in has broken in the open position - so the cold air from the freezer is constantly pouring into the fridge compartment, and the panel is unable to shut.
Conversely, if your fridge is not getting cold enough but the freezer is, then the baffle / damper has broken in the closed position, so no cold air is getting in - but more on that another time.
The baffle / damper failing can be due to an electrical and mechanical fault - but it's not worth trying to repair. Instead, what we need to do is simply remove the assembly that the baffle damper sits in and fit a new one - and it's just one screw!
You can also replace just the baffle / damper, but we find that more often than not it's impossible to remove it from the housing without irreversibly breaking the polystyrene.
What do I need to buy to fix my freezing Westinghouse fridge?
OK so now we're getting down to it! All you need to get to fix the problem of a frozen fridge is to buy a new housing, it's that simple. The housing contains the baffle / damper, so a new housing will fix the problem.
Depending on your model, what you need is below. If you're not sure, just drop us a line on our contact form!

When the housing arrives, remember to swap over the display if it's a WSE6100 model - these unclip and unplug really easily once the housing is removed from the top of the fridge compartment.
Also swap over the light bulb and light cover for all models. TIP: Push the light cover in at both sides at the BOTTOM first then the top, not the other way round!).
How do I stop my Westinghouse fridge freezing?
OK so now to the nitty gritty - which is remarkably easy.
- TURN OFF YOUR FRIDGE. Unplug it just to be sure.
- Remove the white light cover from your control housing
- Unscrew the white screw in the middle of the housing at the bottom
- Pull the housing down and sit it on a glass shelf to expose the wires top right
- Unplug the wires from the fridge. These are called Deutsch plugs and you just apply pressure with a finger of flat screwdriver etc over the connection to release.
- Plug your new housing in!
- Test the baffle / damper by turning the fridge back on withe the baffle / damper visible in the closed position, to confirm the baffle opens.
- Turn the fridge back off and push the housing against the back of the fridge compartment then up into the cavity.
- Screw in.
- Turn back on the fridge (with light and lens cover swapped over) and your fridge should go back to normal temperature.
If you need a video for any of the above, simply drop us a message via our contact form and we'll send you one!
How do I test if my baffle / damper is broken?
There is an outside chance that the PCB, display or temperature sensors are broken but these are 1 in 100 chances compared to the 99 that it's the baffle / damper. An easy way to check before you commit to a purchase is to turn the fridge off, unscrew the housing but don't unplug. Instead, sit it on a glass shelf and turn it to the side so you can see baffle / damper.
With your finger, move the vent so that it's in the closed position (it will be in the open position if your fridge is freezing food obviously). Just this action alone may expose the fault as if it's a mechanical failure where the little plastic in the cogs have broken (this is in the box at the bottom of the baffle / damper), then you may hear a cracking sound as you break more and there will be resistance against your finger in what is a normally smooth, oiled motion.
Now, close the door and turn on the fridge. Open it again and watch the baffle / damper. If it's working, it should be moving back to the open position as that's what all fridges do on start up to get cold air into the fridge.
So if there's no motion, it's highly likely the baffle / damper is broken.
About fridgeparts.com
So many perfectly repairable fridges end up at landfill because of a lack of publicly available knowledge on how to fix them ourselves - and at affordable prices.
Instead, as a society we continually buy cheap fridges which don't last long - which we throw away, forever repeating the cycle.
FridgeParts.com exists to stop this travesty. Our parts are designed to be the cheapest available anywhere in the world or we'll beat by 5%. We offer videos, tutorials such as this one and we are happy to help via our contact form.
We believe in a circular economy where everyone has the right to repair - protecting our planet from harmful waste.
