If you need a hand with anything at all, feel free to use our chat box for free, instant, expert advice.
If your fridge is not cooling AT ALL, then you need this article:
This blog refers to all Westinghouse side by side fridges with model numbers beginning WSE6070, WSE6100, WSE6970 and WSE7000. It may also apply to older or newer models with different model numbers - feel free to use out chat option if you're not sure!
We strongly recommend that you read each section of this article so that you fully understand how your fridge works - even if your fix is one of the early ones. That way if you get another problem further down the line you'll know what to do!
Why is the fridge side of my Westinghouse side by side fridge freezer not getting down to temperature?
When the fridge section is cooling slightly but not enough - between 10 to 20 degrees for instance - it could be a variety of reasons. So in order to identify which individual one it is we will need to troubleshoot them all.
You may also have the code CN - ER flashing or beeping on your display which means COMMUNICATION ERROR - basically that the fridge display is unable to talk to a broken moving part.
It may also be that there are two or more minor faults as some fridges can just about struggle on fine with one small fault.
So in short, a moving part has broken or is obstructed - but rest assured that each is an easy, affordable fix. They are listed below in order of ease so that we tackle the easiest options first!
- Condenser fan broken
- Evaporator (freezer) fan broken
- Baffle / damper broken in closed position
- Power board broken
- Display broken
- Temperature sensor broken
1. Westinghouse side by side fridge condenser fan broken
The condenser fan sits between the compressor and condenser at the rear of the fridge. To check if it is working, simply follwo the steps below:
- Pull out the fridge.
- Turn off the fridge
- Unscrew the dust cover
- Spin the fan manually to check for any obstruction or broken blade
- Turn the fridge back on again to see if it's spinning!
If it's not, then you need to replace one of the following two options:
- Westinghouse fridge freezer condenser fan - metal
- Westinghouse fridge freezer condenser fan - plastic
If you're not sure how to fit it, send us a message on our chat and we'll send instructions!
2. Westinghouse side by side fridge evaporator fan broken
The evaporator fan sits in the freezer above the evaporator - the evaporator is what makes the fridge cold! The evaporator fan blows the cold air up the back panel of the freezer and into the fridge. Here's how to check if it's broken:
- Turn off the fridge
- Remove all food and shelves from the freezer compartment
- Unscrew and remove both back panels to reveal evaporator fan - it's black and red
- Spin the fan manually to check for any obstruction or broken blade
- Turn on fridge
- Press the door button on the left of the freezer compartment to simulate the door closing to see if it's spinning with both the door open and closed.
If the evaporator fan isn't spinning, then you need to replace the item below:
It's very easy to install, just unplug the broken one, slide it out, slide the new one in and plug in!
3. Westinghouse fridge baffle / damper broken in closed position
The baffle / damper is the little door that sits at the top of the fridge compartment that opens and closes to let the cold air in from the freezer side. So if this breaks in the open position the fridge gets too cold, if it breaks half open you might not notice unless you go on holiday, but if it breaks in the closed position your fridge might not get cold enough - especially if your fridge door is opened a lot!
Here's how to check:
- Turn off fridge
- Remove contents of top shelf
- Remove cover over lightbulb
- Unscrew entire display housing
- Open and close baffle door manually to check it's not broken
- If it's not, sit housing sideways (keep plugged in) so you can see baffle - start it in open position
- Turn fridge back on
- The baffle should close then reopen as this is what it does upon start up each time
If your baffle / damper is broken (you might even hear it grinding if so), then you need to replace either item below:
If you're handy, you can probably just buy the baffle and remove the current one without damaging the polystyrene foam. However, if you have sausage fingers then removing the baffle does carry significant risk of irreversibly damaging the polystyrene foam. In this case, it's better to but the full housing and just swap the displays over - message us on our chat function if you need a hand doing this!
4. Westinghouse fridge power board broken
It is possible that the supply of power to any of the three parts above is causing the fridge to not cool enough - if the power to a fan or damper has been cut for example. However, this is unlikely as usually the lack of power will also mean that the lights don't work or the fridge is not getting cold at all. If you're sure it is a power board issue, here are your options:
Instructions on how to fit it are in our other article here.
5. Westinghouse fridge display broken
Again, it is highly unlikely but physically possible that if your Westinghouse side by side fridge freezer is not getting cold enough then the digital display has developed a fault and needs replacing. However, when the display fails it usually just goes blank and the fridge carries on at default temperature settings. If you're sure it's the display, then you need to replace one of the following items:
WSE6070 (the v1s don't control temperature)
- Westinghouse fridge digital display v2 - grey
-
Westinghouse fridge digital display v2 - white
- Westinghouse fridge digital display v3 - grey
- Westinghouse fridge digital display v3 - white
WSE6100
WSE6970
- Westinghouse fridge digital display v2 - grey
-
Westinghouse fridge digital display v2 - white
- Westinghouse fridge digital display v3 - grey
- Westinghouse fridge digital display v3 - white
WSE7000
6. Westinghouse fridge temperature sensor broken
It is highly unlikely but nonetheless physically possible that a temperature sensor has broken - causing the fridge to think it is cold enough when it is not. There is no way to replace these as they are hard wired in behind the white protect covers in both the fridge and freezer, so if you're sure they are faulty it's best to cut them with a wire cutter and re-attach new ones - they're very cheap on eBay and Google.
